Pembroke School is a co-educational, non-denominational, day and boarding School from Early Learning Centre to Year 12. Pembroke School offers the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offering the IB Diploma and the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

Position Context

The tradition of Outdoor Education at Pembroke School dates back over 30 years and is a compulsory and valued aspect of our curriculum from Year 7 to Year 10. The program offers a staged and progressive approach – providing appropriate challenge and depth for all students. The experiences of students on the camps integrates strongly with the school’s Social, Emotional and Personal Development program (SE&PD). Exposure to the local indigenous history and current community is an important aspect of the program.

The base for the Outdoor Education program in the Middle School is Old Watulunga, a 17-hectare property on the Finniss River, 75 kilometres south of Adelaide. This property is an excellent facility. There is a staff office and accommodation together with kitchen/dining facilities for 50, an indoor rock-climbing wall and low ropes course. There is waterfront access to the Finniss River and from there to Lake Alexandrina and the Coorong. There is large shedding and barns, housing windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, boating and other associated outdoor equipment.

The staffing within the Middle School Outdoor Education team consists two specialist teaching staff, two non-teaching staff and various contract and seasonal instructors.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 10 participate in programs based at Old Watulunga and develop skills in kayaking, sailing, bushwalking, rock climbing, low ropes and sustainable living. Year 9 students travel to the Yorke Peninsula, 3 hours west of Adelaide, for a journey-based coastal exploration program.
