Within the English department, English language and literature are seen to be at the heart of a sound liberal education.  Great emphasis is placed on developing skills in, and a love for, English.  Appropriate literature is introduced and studied at each level. There is a strong and sustained Wide Reading Program through Years 7 to 10. Canonical and contemporary literature and texts are taught across the 7-12 continuum. There is an emphasis on critical and creative thinking where teachers look to build positive classroom environments to foster a passion for the subject. Throughout the College the English courses aim not only to improve reading and writing skills, but introduce students to big ideas and the relationship between literature and the world.

A thriving department, Philosophy and Religious Studies provides innovative programs as part of the compulsory core curriculum (Years 7-10). There are philosophy elective courses in Years 8, 9 and 10. In the senior years, students may choose Studies of Religion (I and II Unit) for the HSC. For the IB Diploma, the Department is responsible for Philosophy as a Group 3 subject and the Theory of Knowledge course.

The approach to the subject is conceptual and inter-disciplinary, exploring philosophical and ethical issues from a variety of perspectives. There is an emphasis on critical thinking and philosophical inquiry.
