Head of Science

Stanmore · New South Wales

Newington College is looking for an inspired educator to lead our Science department and spearhead Science at the College. We believe that the achievements of Science are extraordinary and that Science classes offer a window into a world that is complex, rich and stirring. We want as many students as possible to think this too. Your role as Head of Science would be to lead your already excellent team to teach as well as they can, stretch the boys, run an effective department and inculcate a love of Science as far as possible. Newington College is, we think, a great place to teach. It is a community of educators who take their vocation seriously, work hard, are respected and get the resources to make the most of their lessons. Our boys are (usually) curious, open-minded and engaging.

About the Position:
The College is seeking to appoint a full-time Head of Science to commence at the beginning of 2021. In recent years the popularity of Science subjects has continued to grow with an increasing percentage of boys carrying on with Science from Year 10 into the NSW Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The Science department’s teaching staff include a full range of disciplines with specialist backgrounds in all major Science subjects, with many of the staff in the department having higher degrees. The appointment has become available due to the long standing and highly successful Head of Science deciding to return to a full-time teaching role.

A new Science Centre was built for the College in 2012.  It has thirteen (13) laboratories catering for Science from Years 7 to 12, including three large specialist super-labs. All Science lessons are conducted in laboratories, allowing for considerable flexibility in teaching programs, classroom practice and student learning.  Practical work in all courses is complemented by the ample provision of both commonplace and specialised Science equipment.

As a BYOD school, technology is used by students for data acquisition and analysis, for access to information sources and resources and for computer-based presentations.  Students are encouraged to enter the many competitions and activities offered to secondary Science students and opportunities are available for students to carry out their own research projects. Typically, such investigative projects are also part of the assessment process for courses in all years.  The Science Department combines with the Technology Department to run a major Science and Technology (STEM) festival every second year.

About you:
  • You will be a registered teacher by the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) with appropriate teaching and tertiary qualifications.
  • You will have a sound understanding of the learning needs of boys and engage boys in a vibrant education program across Years 7 – 12.
  • You will have a proven ability to work as an effective member of an enthusiastic team.
  • You will utilise appropriate technologies to enhance the teaching program.
  • You will be prepared to participate in the College co-curricular program.
