Science Laboratory Assistant
MLC School is seeking a full time, Lab Assistant to join the team on a 1 year contract.
Part-time (0.8 FTE) • 12-month temporary (with potential to become permanent, based on the needs of the school)
Term-time only + 4 weeks

The opportunity
As our Science Laboratory Assistant, you’ll provide timely, professional technical support across the Science department, ensuring practical classes are set up for success and run safely. The role reports to the Science Laboratory Manager and Head of Department – Science and is based in the Senior School.
What you’ll do
- Prepare laboratory equipment and materials for science classes on time.
- Apply WHS legislation and safe work practices in all lab activities.
- Ensure safe storage and disposal of chemicals and biological residues, and maintain safe storage for equipment and materials.
- Clean laboratory equipment and preparation areas to a high standard.
- Liaise with science teachers to support practical work needs; set out and clear equipment before and after classes.
- Maintain stocks of glassware and standard equipment; keep efficient systems for use and allocation.
- Advise and assist teaching staff on safety matters; complete injury/incident reports within 24 hours when required.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Head of Science and Laboratory Manager.
You’ll bring
Qualifications & experience (mandatory):
- Relevant qualification in Applied Science (e.g., Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques) or relevant laboratory experience.
- Knowledge of general science and practical laboratory experience.
- Sound knowledge of Work Health and Safety procedures in a laboratory setting.
Skills & attributes:
- Excellent attention to detail; highly organised, able to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal); able to build trust and work confidently with people at all levels.
- Collaborative, customer-focused, proactive, and principled—aligned with the School’s mission, values and Code of Conduct.
- Comfortable working independently and contributing positively to the team; effective time management.
- Ability to work effectively in a Mac environment using standard Microsoft Office applications.
