What is IB Schools Australia?
IB Schools Australasia (formerly AAIBS) was established specifically to assist schools in Australasia, providing a network of professional support, information and service.
The Association also organises annual professional learning events, advertises employment opportunities within our member schools and produces a newsletter and a variety of support materials.
Our purpose
The income and property of IB Schools Australasia (formerly AAIBS) shall be applied solely in furtherance of its purposes and no portion shall be distributed directly or indirectly except as compensation for services rendered or expenses incurred on behalf of the Association.
Who can IB Schools Australasia support?
Throughout our history we have been proud to support schools in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
We were recently approached by the IB to support some candidate schools in the South West Pacific.
With our constitution stating: “Australasian” shall mean Australia and adjacent islands of the South West Pacific.
We are pleased to confirm that should the need arise we look forward to supporting all adjacent islands of the South West Pacific including: American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna Islands.

Brendan Zani
Standing Committee Member
Brendan has been involved in the International Baccalaureate since 2008, and is passionate about fostering the growth of the IB in Western Australia. As a Diploma Coordinator, Brendan is at the coalface of issues of university admission, student wellbeing, IBO moderation and examination marking, fostering student participation in the Diploma, and recruitment and retention of teachers. Working in the Western Australian context, he is committed to contexts where the IB is not well-established, and has a keen interest in fostering relationships with universities and state educational authorities.
He continues to be excited by the transformative experience the IB provides, a journey he can now see in his own son, who is undertaking the PYP. He is known to regularly bore the other parents in his children’s classes with the benefits of an IB education. Brendan’s Masters thesis, exploring cultures of critical thinking, was stimulated by the distinctive difference he saw an IB education bringing students.
In between terms, Brendan is likely to be found working on French pastries or deep in some other recipe in the kitchen, or quietly chipping away at what he hopes will be a future Miles Franklin award winning novel. He is proud father of two future IB Diploma graduates, and husband to Perth’s unofficial IB ambassador. He continues to cling to his identity as a resident of the ‘most isolated capital city in the world’ while explaining to anyone from the rest of the country that Perth’s weather is different because ‘it’s a dry heat’.
Rebecca Butterworth
Standing Committee Member, IB Schools Australasia
Rebecca Butterworth joined HVGS in January 2022 after 19 years overseas working in international schools in leadership roles. Rebecca has worked in Singapore, Switzerland and China in International Baccalaureate World schools and has a long history as a teacher and administrator working with the PYP, MYP and IB Diploma. Rebecca is an English and History teacher by training, has spent several years teaching IB Diploma Theory of Knowledge course and holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and a Masters of Education.
Rebecca is committed to ensuring education goes beyond preparing students for university and final examinations, knowing that schools need to focus on the emotional health of young people and their capacity to be agile and flexible in an increasingly complex world. Rebecca’s passion is challenging young people to become autonomous, self-directed, compassionate, and well-balanced individuals who utilise their talents to have a positive impact on others. Mental health and wellbeing, and developing a strong culture of agency for staff and students, has been a central focus of Rebecca’s work as a Principal in Australia and overseas.
