About the Role
Hunter Valley Grammar School seeks to appoint a full time (1.0 FTE) temporary (12 month) Gifted and Talented Teacher / Classroom Teacher to our Junior School commencing in Term 1, 2026.
The Junior School at Hunter Valley Grammar School (HVGS) is an authorised International Baccalaureate World School, teaching the Primary Years Programme.
Junior School teachers are engaged to provide stimulating, engaging, collaborative, evidence-informed education to K-6 students, contributing to the School’s cultural, curricular and co-curricular life.
The Junior School Gifted and Talented Teacher is responsible for the implementation of best-practice teaching and adjustments for high-potential and gifted and talented students.
The role requires working collaboratively with the Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Classroom Teachers, Junior School staff, students and families, and relevant ELC-12 personnel across the School.
The Gifted and Talented Teacher / Classroom Teacher is expected to work the days and hours required to fulfil the obligations of the role; these may vary depending on the specific requirements of the Junior School and the necessary obligations the role demands at certain times of the year.
Work Pattern: 8:00am until at least 4:00pm, Monday to Friday in 2026.
Key Duties
- Inspire, drive and facilitate the development and implementation of robust, evidence-informed, best practice Junior School Gifted Education, such that we are the region’s outstanding school for gifted students.
- Develop, implement and evaluate curriculum, assessment and pedagogy in High Potential and Gifted Education, in collaboration with the Junior School Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
- Identify and program for high potential and gifted students, in collaboration with classroom teachers.
- Implement co-teaching and inclusive pedagogy through in-class co-teaching, small group teaching, and large group teaching of mixed ability, high potential and gifted learners.
- Teach across all key learning areas, including but not limited to English, Mathematics and transdisciplinary Units of Inquiry.
- Model inclusion and diversity through exemplary teaching practice in catering for high potential and gifted students.
- Develop Personalised Learning Pathway documentation for students identified as high potential and/or gifted, in collaboration with the Junior School Head of Student Services.
- Support differentiated classroom practice and provide enrichment experiences for students identified including accelerating the mastery of basic skills and reorganisation of the curriculum according to higher level skills and concepts.
- Lead the identification of and inclusive programming for high potential and gifted students.
- Assist the Junior School Head of Curriculum with the administration of school-based assessments for the data collection and lead the analysis of data to track the progress of high potential and gifted students, including underachievers.
- Teach within the HVGS co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, offering after-school enrichment programs and competitions, including opportunities to both challenge and support high potential and gifted students.
- Work with the Junior School Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Junior School Head of Student Services and other curriculum leaders to determine the criteria for extension program student entry.
- Coordinate external academic competitions including ICAS, Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competitions and others as deemed beneficial, in collaboration with the Junior School Head of Curriculum and the Junior School Gifted and Talented Coordinator.
- Present to the Junior School Executive ideas for professional learning which will develop capacity in teachers to meet academic and wellbeing needs of high potential and gifted students.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the complex nature of high potential and gifted students, including the capacity to advocate for and support students.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents and family members, responding promptly to parent concerns.
- Attend parent/teacher nights, assemblies, presentation ceremonies and other school functions as determined by the Principal, some of these are outside of normal hours.
- Attend annual school camps, which generally occur during term time and require nights away from home.
About You
- Be an all-round professional, dedicated to continuing development who excels in working collaboratively.
- Be able to demonstrate excellence in improving student learning and wellbeing outcomes including students who have been identified as high potential or gifted.
- Be able to demonstrate how their teaching practice incorporates a sound evidence-base and inspires high potential and gifted learners.
- Have excellent knowledge of the NESA syllabus outcomes and proven skills as a Primary Classroom teacher.
- Understand inquiry pedagogy and be able to successfully implement it in the classroom.
- Value a partnership with families of the School in seeking the best outcome for each student.
- Understand and is committed to the Australian Professional Standards for Teaching.
- Be accredited with NESA (or be eligible for accreditation to teach Stages 1-3) and hold an appropriate tertiary qualification or qualifications.
- Manage one’s own annual accreditation requirements including fee payment and maintenance of a current Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance.
Desirable:
- Experience with the Primary Years’ Program (International Baccalaureate).
- Proven record of teaching high potential and gifted learners.
- Strong ICT skills and data literacy.
- Experience in implementing whole-school enrichment and extension opportunities.
- Training or qualifications in Gifted Education.
- Proven record of innovative practice fostering inclusion and diversity.
