About the Role

Hunter Valley Grammar School seeks to appoint a permanent full-time Educational Assistant to our Senior School.

The Educational Assistant – Senior School plays a critical role in supporting HVGS Senior School students and staff by assisting to provide social, emotional, physical, cognitive and /or sensory support in the classroom or learning environment.

The Educational Assistant – Senior School has a passion for helping students be the best they can be and help create an environment where students are able to flourish.

Work Pattern: This is a permanent full-time position working 38 hours per week Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:06 pm with a 30-minute lunch break, during term time only.

Key Duties

As an Educational Assistant in the Senior School, you will be required to:

  • Apply knowledge of appropriate strategies to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom
  • Understand students’ individual strengths, challenges and support them effectively
  • Strive to build positive and respectful relationships with all students and colleagues
  • Prepare teacher aids such as photocopying, collate written or printed material, develop charts, games, and scaffolds/aids as necessary
  • Deliver targeted programs with a focus on intervention and supporting students’ needs
  • Assist individual students in developing cognitive, social, emotional, and/or behavioural skills as needed in accordance with student Personalised Learning Plans
  • Support individual students to regulate behaviours and use a trauma informed approach when supporting a student’s wellbeing
  • Source and develop teaching resources to support teachers of students with diverse needs
  • Support teachers to maintain an effective and vibrant learning environment, via the delivery of educational curriculum specifically as it relates to students’ individual needs
  • Support students through the creation of scaffolds for assessment tasks timetables and planners to support students
  • Assist and support students when operating practical subjects, ie practical experiments (where required)
  • Undertake administrative duties including student data record keeping, filing, prompt and responsible use of email, and engagement in Microsoft Teams, OneNote; Microsoft Office skills are essential
  • Attend after school support classes and provide direct support and supervision of students
  • Complete observations of students as required, including monitoring, and recording of interventions for NCCD processes
  • Complete professional development training to help ensure further development of current, relevant, and future necessary skills
  • Use knowledge and skills gained through professional learning to improve professional practice
  • Support and assist students in both academic and non-academic activities during school hours
  • Participate in a supervisory and support role at Senior School excursions and sporting carnivals, including the Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals and School Camps
  • Share sensitive information with appropriate persons whilst maintaining a student’s confidentiality
  • Other duties as directed by the Head of Student Services (Senior School)

About You

  • You will hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance or willingness to obtain prior to commencement (essential)
  • A Certificate III or IV in Educational Support or equivalent (highly desirable)
  • A current CPR/First Aid Certificate or equivalent (highly desirable)
  • 2 years’ experience in a similar role (desirable)
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of Special Education Needs and Disabilities
  • Ability to engage with students of all ages compassionately and empathetically while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
  • High level of written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and an innate ability to converse respectfully and kindly with parents, students, and teachers
  • Excellent digital literacy skills (Microsoft Office, Excel, Adobe Suite)
  • Ability to:
    • build and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of people
    • work in a dynamic team environment
    • work autonomously, using initiative and without direct supervision support
    • provide support to a small group or individual students in basic skills as required
    • motivate students to participate in unfamiliar or challenging academic, social and/or physical activities
    • contribute openly and with confidence with other team members in a respectful and sensitive manner
    • redirect and support students into appropriate behaviours during activities
    • maintain strict confidentiality at all times
    • maintain safe work practices.
