2017 Visiting Speaker Series: Brisbane
Professor Martin Westwell will present the IB Schools Australasia 2017 Speaker Series on the topic Changing Challenge: using creativity for disposition and differentiation.
Evidence from recent research suggests that if we change the way that we think about challenge it can open new ways to help us shape young people’s disposition towards learning and provide opportunities for differentiation.
Organisations like the OECD have set out some of the challenges for education around the world including how each learning area might serve young people and innovative communities now and in the future. How will they know what to do when they don’t know what to do?
Martin will use classroom practices that have been co-developed with teachers, in a context created by leaders, to exemplify ways in which using the same content but different thinking can shape the way that young people actively engage with their learning.
About the Presenter:
Martin Westwell is Strategic Professor in the Science of Learning at Flinders University and Director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century.
After completing his degree and PhD at Cambridge University, Martin moved to Oxford University as a Research Fellow in Biological and Medical Sciences at Lincoln College. He left academia to pursue a range of work in education and public engagement.
He returned to Oxford in 2005 as the Deputy Director of the Institute for the Future of the Mind where he ran the research program on the influence of modern lifestyles and technologies on the minds of the young and the old.
