2026 IB Diploma Conversion to ATAR equivalent (IBAS) available

June 16, 2025

University Entrance 2026

The conversion from IB Diploma passing score to Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) equivalent has been released for 2025 Australian students entering university in 2026. The new conversion may be found here.

This conversion is based on a direct conversion from whole IB Diploma results to an ATAR equivalent.  ACTAC introduced a finer grained conversion equivalent in 2023 which has been updated for 2026 university entry.

Students will receive their results on 17 December 2025 with the ACTAC calculated IB Admissions Score (IBAS) fine-grained conversion available on 18 December, 2025.

The additional scale for students who just miss the Diploma award, (e.g., receive a result of 23 etc) but meet IB requirements has also been updated.  Universities in ACT, NSW, and Victoria use this scale.

IB Diploma results release December 2024

December 17, 2024

On December 17, 3,047  students in Australia, 444 students in New Zealand, were amongst the 21,894 students worldwide to receive their Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP) results from the November 2024 examination session. In the May 2024 examination session, an additional 192,866 students completed the DP and CP. The 2024 Australian cohort is 15% larger than in 2023, reflecting the ongoing growth in the number of IBDP schools and candidates in Australia.

In Australia, the largest IB Diploma cohort was in NSW with 827 students, followed by Victoria with 823, Queensland with 760, South Australia with 341, ACT with 184, Western Australia with 57, and Tasmania with 53 candidates. Additionally, a small number of Australasian candidates completed the Diploma in Fiji and PNG.

The Australian average result was 34 compared with the global figure of 29.  The Australian average pass rate result was 92% compared with 72% globally.  The Australian average grade was 5.4, compared with 4.7 globally.  593 Australian students made up 34% of the 1766 results above 40 out of the maximum 45 across the world in the November 2024 examination session.

IB students and IB World Schools are diverse, with varying contexts, socioeconomic positions, and cohort sizes. Additionally, IB students’ individual achievements extend beyond their assessment scores. Given these considerations, the IB does not share assessment data to prevent generalized comparisons. The IB is equally proud of all students and their accomplishments during their two-year DP or CP journey. IB Schools Australasia supports this approach. Neither the IB nor IBSA provides data that would enable rankings, as this is counter to the mission of both organizations.

About IB Programmes

The Diploma Programme (DP) provides students with world-class preparation for university and a lifetime of opportunity. It is a comprehensive, inquiry-based education that empowers students to take control of their learning, developing superior academic ability, confidence, critical-thinking, and language skills. This rigorous framework is recognized and respected by the world’s leading universities and aims to support the whole student to flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically.

An independent study published in 2024 compared the outcomes of Australian graduates who completed the IB Diploma with those who completed state-based Senior School Certifications. The data controlled for gender and socioeconomic status. Across all measures, IB Diploma students received university admission offers, continued to their second year of study, and completed university at significantly higher rates than non-DP students at all checkpoints examined within the study (4 years, 6 years, and 9 years after commencement). Additionally, completing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme appears to offer an advantage in university completion rates for students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Read the research here.

The Career-related Programme (CP) is specifically designed for students aged 16–19 who wish to engage in career-related learning while also gaining lifelong skills such as confidence, social responsibility, and a sense of purpose. The CP is an innovative blend of academic study and career development that incorporates the vision and educational principles of the IB into a unique programme. Hear more from IBCP alumni.

In addition to the Diploma and Career-related programmes, thousands of other Australasian students study the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programmes annually.

University Entrance

In Australia, IB Diploma graduate results are converted to an IB Admissions Score (IBAS), which is an Australian Tertiary Assessment Rank (ATAR) equivalent. The IBAS and ATAR are calculated by the Australian Council of Tertiary Admissions Centres (ACTAC), an independent body acting on behalf of Australian Tertiary Admissions Centres (NSW UAC, VTAC, SATAC, QTAC, and WISC) to ensure a fair comparison between IB Diploma results and state-based qualifications (NSW HSC, VCE, SACE, etc.).

In New Zealand, as with the rest of the world, the IB Diploma is accepted as a direct entry qualification to universities.

For the November 2024 examination session, DP and CP students completed all assessment components for each subject, and the IB awarded grades using all components, coursework, and examinations.

Lycée Condorcet Sydney: Unlocking Excellence

June 27, 2024

Located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Lycée Condorcet de Sydney (LCS) stands out as a beacon of bilingual education excellence. Offering a curriculum in French and English from ages 3 to 18, LCS is a proud member of the worldwide network of French schools abroad (AEFE), embodying educational excellence “à la française”.

Since 2007, LCS has provided the globally recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. What distinguishes LCS is its academic rigour and unique Northern Hemisphere academic calendar, making it Australia’s only May-session school. This schedule aligns perfectly with Northern Hemisphere university admissions, giving LCS graduates a competitive edge. Flexibility is key at LCS, welcoming mid-year entries into Year 10 to seamlessly integrate into our IB Programme. As one of the few co-educational schools in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs offering the IB Diploma Programme, LCS fosters a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

Our dedicated faculty, continuously trained to deliver contemporary and globally relevant education, supports our commitment to academic excellence. This dedication is reflected in our students’ achievements, with 98% gaining university entrance globally in 2023. Mastery of French is not required, welcoming students from all language backgrounds.

Marcel Hennes, IB history teacher, reflects on the LCS experience: “On campus, you’ll see students stepping into class fresh off a surfboard or still buzzing from a theatre production the night before. They walk into the same classroom, perfectly equal. This embodies the IB ethos — ‘you be you’ — in a region where socioeconomic divides dissolve and global influences converge.”

As LCS continues its legacy of IB excellence, we invite students worldwide to join our vibrant community. With academic rigour, cultural diversity, and affordable excellence, LCS prepares students to excel in a connected world.

Westbourne College Sydney: Global connections open doors to Korea

June 27, 2024

Westbourne College Sydney recently hosted student delegates from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea on their recent 2024 cultural exchange trip to Australia in their only Sydney school visit.

This cultural experience began with Patrick McGing, Westbourne Principal introducing visitors to Australia and explaining what makes Westbourne College Sydney unique. In turn, Korean Supervisors introduced Sydney students to their school and island followed by a collaborative game borne from the world phenomenon series, Squid Game. After time to converse and exchange contact details, the morning concluded with a gift exchange and Westbourne students chanted, ‘‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!”

“This was a great opportunity to learn more about the history of Korea and work past the language barriers present in our meeting. The visitors were very respectful, approachable, and friendly towards me which created many pleasant conversations.” said Zain Mumtaz, DP1.

While students at Westbourne study Chinese: Mandarin or Spanish as part of their IB Diploma Programme, exposure to other cultures and languages around the world remains pertinent. Each additional experience continues to build upon Sydney students’ cultural awareness and respect for diversity.

“This cultural experience through Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea is a key example where Westbourne International continues to build bridges and open global doors for our students in Sydney. I am highly impressed at how the students of both our schools came together – College was exhilarating and full of laughter. We sincerely thank our new friends for the visit and wish them well for the remainder of their trip in Australia,” Patrick said.
