Sophia Mundi is an independent, non-denominational and co-educational inner city Melbourne Steiner school that offers an enriching, holistic educational pathway from Early Childhood to Senior Secondary. We are located in the beautiful grounds of the Abbotsford Convent, next door to the Collingwood Children’s Farm. We are a not-for-profit organisation, a member of Steiner Education Australia and an IB World School. We are the only Steiner school in Australia to combine the creative and academic richness of Steiner education (to grade 10) with the academic rigour of the International Baccalaureate (grades 11 & 12).
At Sophia Mundi we are proud of our senior secondary students and the focused, responsible and ethical way they go about their final two years of school. Having had their intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs nurtured, Year 11 and 12 students are more able to engage with the challenge of their final years with clarity of mind, body and spirit. Our goal is to educate to whole person towards a freedom of thought and action. Sophia Mundi is one of only two Steiner schools in Australia to incorporate the IB Diploma into the final two years of secondary school and the decision to introduce the IB Diploma in 2011 (with the first class graduating in 2013) offered new and continuing students greater flexibility in terms of their subject specialisations and career pathways.
A middle ground between the VCE and Steiner Education, the IB Diploma enables the student to focus on areas of strength while at the same time covering a vast range of subject areas to provide a rounded holistic education. A demanding and rigorous Diploma requiring considerable application and focus, the IB Diploma is well suited to the kind of learning environment that Sophia Mundi provides. Our quiet, harmonious and relatively small class sizes and numerous specialist staff provide the student with the consistent, supportive environment needed to fulfil and succeed in their assessments and final exams.
