The Friends’ School is a pre-K to 12 co-educational day and boarding school in Hobart, Australia, founded in 1887 and based on Quaker values. Friends’ has a strong academic record supported by a recognition of the need to provide pastoral care at all levels of the school.
The Friends’ School is an independent school that is not-for-profit and governed by a Board of Governors following the Australian and IB curricular model.
Friends’ has a total enrolment of 1200 and offers students the choice of the International Baccalaureate, the Tasmanian Certificate of Education, and Vocational Education and Training at Years 11 and 12.
The Friends’ School is proud to offer students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The two-year curriculum is rigorous and intellectually coherent, encouraging critical thinking through the study of a wide range of subjects in the traditional academic disciplines while encouraging an international perspective. The focus on global knowledge and understanding and the emphasis on the education of the whole person to be found in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program fit well with the Purpose and Concerns of The Friends’ School. Equally as important, the standards of education expected by the Diploma program match those of The Friends’ School, ensuring students leave the school with the best preparation for life possible.
The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) is the curriculum framework for all children from Kinder to Year 6. It focuses on the development of the whole child, offering a framework to meet the academic, cultural, physical, social and spiritual development of each person. At the heart of the PYP is structured, purposeful and planned inquiry that actively engages children. The explicit learning outcomes from the Australian Curriculum are used to drive the planning process. Students are an integral part of the learning process and are encouraged to become independent learners. We aim to develop children’s intercultural understanding and promote global citizenship.
